GainSpan Introduces New Video and Audio Application Development Kits

Latest ADKs built on GS2000 Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n Chip

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 26, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —   GainSpan® Corporation, a leader in low-power Wi-Fi for the Internet of Things, today announced new versions of its VGA Video and Audio Application Development Kits (ADKs). These ADKs simply substitute the GS1011 based Wi-Fi modules with the new GS2000 based modules, and highlight the ease of upgrade for customers. The new ADKs offer improved performance over the previous generation and make it easy to add audio and video streaming capabilities to the ever growing number of IOT devices. Customers who already use the GS1011M Wi-Fi module in their video and audio streaming applications can simply replace their module with the new pin and footprint compatible GS2011M module, eliminating the need for hardware redesign.

The GS2000 VGA Video ADK is a reference design for wireless video streaming applications such as Wi-Fi doorbells, IP cameras, car back-up cameras and video baby monitors. It allows users to stream live video from a VGA camera to an iOS or Android based smartphone. The larger memory available on the GS2000 SoC enables enhanced buffering, and together with higher throughput SPI interfaces, leads to higher performance video streaming.

The GS2000 Audio ADK allows developers to easily integrate audio streaming services into end products such as wireless speakers, headphones, microphones, walkie-talkies and baby monitors.  Audio can be streamed between a Wi-Fi enabled device and an iOS based smartphone. The GS2000 Audio ADK supports commonly used audio formats such as MP3 and AAC.  Like the VGA Video ADK, the Audio ADK uses additional memory available on the GS2000 SoC for improved buffering of audio data, resulting in glitch-free music streaming.

The Kits
The VGA Video ADK includes the video application board, complete hardware design package and software suite with reference source code for the video embedded application and iOS and Android based mobile applications. The video application board features the GainSpan GS2011MIZ Wi-Fi module, Omnivision OV780 H.264 video encoder chip, an Omnivision VGA (640*480) resolution imaging sensor and lens module, and motion detector. The Video ADK uses RTP/RTSP protocol to transmit video to the mobile player for decoding.

The Audio ADK includes an audio application board, complete hardware design package and software suite with reference source code for the GainSpan audio embedded firmware and iOS mobile application. The audio application board features the GS2011MIZ Wi-Fi module, VLSI Solution VS1053B audio codec, a microphone and connections to speakers for audio streaming.

Application Evaluation Kits (AEKs) are available for both new ADKs and include binary versions of the software.
