The International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society to Present Sir Charles Wheatstone Award to BSkyB at Society’s 2015 Creative Arts Awards

LOS ANGELES — (BUSINESS WIRE) — November 20, 2014 — Satellite broadcaster Sky will receive the 2015 Sir Charles Wheatstone Award from The International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society at the organization’s annual black-tie Creative Arts Awards ceremony January 28th at Warner Bros. Studios in Hollywood. The award is presented each year by The Society to recognize organizations that have “singularly advanced the arts and sciences of 3D” in movies and television. This year, Sky, along with the broadcaster’s acclaimed Sir David Attenborough documentary series, will be honored.

“Sky has been at the forefront of television’s technical and creative achievements,” stated Society Chairman Mike DeValue of The Walt Disney Studios. “This is our industry’s opportunity to acknowledge Sky’s breathtaking productions, exemplified by the Attenborough documentaries, which have set the worldwide standard for technical excellence and 3D storytelling,” he added.

Since launching in October 2010, Sky 3D has broken new ground across a range of genres including live music, the arts, sports, movies and natural history, including six landmark projects from Sir David Attenborough with a seventh, Conquest of the Skies, due to premiere on the service this Christmas. Produced by Colossus Productions, a joint venture company formed by Sky and Atlantic Productions, Attenborough’s Sky 3D documentaries have delighted critics and audiences alike, and delivered multiple award wins.

“From broadcasting these stunning documentaries, to the world’s first opera in 3D, to the broadcast premiere of ‘Avatar’ and more than 150 live sporting events, on TV, all in 3D, Sky has written the book on how 3D can thrill viewers at home,” said Society Awards Chair, Buzz Hays, Studio Chief of the True Image Company. “This is The Society’s opportunity to honor their brilliant team of technical and creative professionals who bring 3D to TV,” added Hays.

“At Sky, we’re committed to harnessing the latest innovations to deliver the very best viewing experiences to our customers,” said Julia Barry, Director of Sky 3D. “To receive this year’s Wheatstone Award is a great honor and testament to the ingenuity of the team at Sky and our collaborators.”

Sir Charles Wheatstone is credited by history as the inventor of modern-day 3D. The Society’s Wheatstone Award has previously been presented to Pixar, DreamWorks Animation, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Panasonic Hollywood Labs.

“The Sir Charles Wheatstone Award has been traditionally presented to motion picture organizations,” stated Society President Jim Chabin. “It is particularly noteworthy that this year we are acknowledging a television team who have broken down the barriers and produced quality programing with an uncompromising dedication to excellence,” he added.

The Society’s Creative Arts Awards annually bestow its gold Lumiere™ statuette to 3D movies, television programs, advanced imaging technology and other content as selected by the Society’s voting membership.
