Summit Technologies’ Knowledge Management Solution Saves Army $9 Million, Improves Performance

RESTON, Va. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — December 3, 2014 — A suite of knowledge management solutions developed by Summit Technologies, Inc. for the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM) at Fort Lee, VA is responsible for major performance management improvements and documenting more than $9 million in travel savings for the military.

One solution, which uses synchronous collaboration and knowledge sharing capabilities to engage more than 21,000 virtual trainees at CASCOM, has led to Summit being named one of only 20 finalists globally for the highly sought-after KMWorld Promise Award. Presented by KMWorld Magazine, the Promise Award is presented to organizations which help their clients to achieve exemplary results by implementing and integrating knowledge management practices into their business processes.

CASCOM is the Army’s sustainment think tank and premier learning institution, training approximately 118,000 students annually while supporting more than 400,000 soldiers and civilians worldwide.

"Summit did not merely supply a technology solution. It provided the entire package – people, process, and technology – resulting in a flexible hybrid of competencies, capable of satisfying every aspect of our technology needs," noted Patrick Conway, Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) at U.S. Army CASCOM.

Summit began its work for CASCOM by assessing the knowledge needs and then migrating the entire CASCOM headquarter staff and five subordinate schools from a legacy platform (SharePoint 2007) to a larger networked environment that included SharePoint 2010 and other enterprise collaboration solutions. This included designing and establishing 20 individual site collections, tailoring each solution to the specifications of the staff or school, and providing “people-to-people” familiarization, training, and over-the-shoulder support to system users.

During the same period, the Summit team analyzed and developed custom applications to routinely capture, monitor, and report man-hour expenditures within CASCOM’s Knowledge Management – Process Improvement (KM-PI) Office. This led to dramatically improved individual and collective performance, and a drastic reduction in time and resources spent on non-value added functions.

In Year Two of the project, Summit increased its focus on performance management, process improvement, and knowledge flows. The Summit team developed leadership dashboards for the CASCOM Commanding General’s mission command system, strategic plan, Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Program (SHARP), and other Army priorities, while establishing a comprehensive performance support capability to train, educate, and support the rapidly growing number of KM-PI knowledge workers within the organization. Summit anticipates continuing its work at CASCOM in 2015.

“In today's global knowledge economy, it is all about continually adapting, innovating, and getting results within government, commercial and other public/private sector organizations,” says Elle Dmytryszyn, Summit’s Chief Knowledge Officer. “Everyone on the Summit team is committed to improving organizational performance through knowledge management and process improvement.”
