From Trend to Standard, 3-D Printing Enters The Classroom Curriculum

PITTSBURG, Kan., June 10, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —  3-D printing is more than the latest tech trend – it is fast becoming an industry standard, which makes it essential for many classrooms.

Pitsco Education is doing its part by developing 3-D printing curriculum. In 2013, Pitsco released 3-D Printing: Vehicle Engineering to introduce students to the power of 3-D printing without requiring a lot of CADD knowledge. Now, the company has developed another three-week curriculum unit focused on this booming technology: 3-D Printing: Design Solutions. Curriculum Specialist Ray Grissom wrote the unit and says working with 3-D printing engages students more than traditional technologies.

"It's fascinating for kids," he said. "They can create different things and have them in their hand within an hour or so. If they can draw it, they can print it and hold it."

In 3-D Printing: Design Solutions, students alter an existing part to fit a specific need and then design their own part from scratch. Not only do students learn about design and modification but also about copyrights, patents, and trademarks. Grissom says this is important because of the ease of accessing others' ideas online.

Working on projects isn't necessarily limited to the classroom. The unit utilizes Autodesk® 123D® Design software that is available online with cloud storage, which enables students to develop and print their projects by connecting an iPad to the cloud.

"Once they have their information stored, they can work on it anywhere," Grissom said.

The curriculum is sold separately or as part of a package that also includes four 3-D printers, filament, and other needed tools and supplies. To learn more about Pitsco's 3-D printing offerings, visit www.pitsco.com.
