Cypress's USB Power Delivery Controllers Achieve USB-IF Certification For Multiple USB Type-C™ Applications

Highly-Integrated, Single-Chip EZ-PD™ CCG1 and CCG2 Controllers Enable Fast Time to Market for Emerging USB Type-C Notebooks, Power Adapters, Cables and Cable Adapters

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 19, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —  Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: CY) today announced that its EZ-PD™ CCG1 and EZ-PD CCG2 USB Power Delivery (PD) controllers passed the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) certification test procedure for   USB Type-C™ DRP (Dual Role Port), DFP (Downstream Facing Port), and UFP (Upstream Facing Port) applications. The Cypress controllers received approved Product Test IDs 1096037, 1096039, 1096040, 1096042, 1096044 and 1096047 at the recently concluded USB-IF Compliance Workshop event held in Portland, Oregon. EZ-PD controllers address a broad set of market segments such as USB Type-C Notebooks, Power Adapters, Monitors, Docks, Cables and Cable Adapters (dongles). Cypress is demonstrating its EZ-PD controllers and EZ-USB® SuperSpeed USB portfolio here at the Intel Developer Forum at booth number 910 in the USB Community from August 18-20, 2015.

Cypress's EZ-PD CCG1 and second-generation EZ-PD CCG2 controllers each previously achieved certification for USB Power Delivery (PD) E-Marker capabilities and were assigned Product Test IDs 1095054 and 1095059. E-Marker chips are used in USB Power Delivery cables, including USB Type-C, to report the characteristics a cable supports, such as current-carrying capability, protocols supported and vendor identification. The USB Type-C standard is gaining rapid support with top-tier PC and electronics manufacturers by enabling slim industrial designs, easy-to-use connectors and cables, and the ability to transmit multiple protocols and deliver up to 100W of power. The USB Type-C standard's 2.4-mm-high connector plug is significantly smaller than current 4.5-mm USB Standard-A connector.  In addition to the transport of USB signals, DisplayPort and Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) signals may be delivered over the same connector via the USB Type-C Alternate Mode capability.

"The combination of USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery are enabling new performance, connectivity and charging usage models to a wide range of computing and mobile applications with a single cable solution for performance, power and convenience," said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF President and COO. "USB-IF certification is essential to ensuring that a product is compliant with the highest standard in the industry and that it will interoperate with all other products identified with the same certified logo. Products that achieve USB-IF certification, such as Cypress's flexible EZ-PD CCG1 and CCG2 controllers, bring USB Power Delivery and a seamless user experience for emerging USB Type-C products."

"Our programmable EZ-PD USB Type-C solutions provide unmatched design flexibility to our customers to address multiple applications, and now they have passed USB-IF certification," said Ajay Srikrishna, vice president of the USB product line at Cypress. "Cypress is committed to expanding our solutions for USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery to enable slimmer, next-generation designs and to ensure a smooth migration process as USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery proliferate."

The EZ-PD CCG1 USB Type-C port controllers are based on Cypress's PSoC® 4 programmable system-on-chip architecture. PSoC's programmability enabled Cypress to integrate the transceiver for USB Type-C communication within a matter of weeks and to get its product to market fast and first. The controllers provide design flexibility for multiple USB Type-C applications such as cables, power adapters, notebooks, dongles and monitors. A CCG1 product video, which demonstrates the transmission of DisplayPort signals over a USB Type-C connection, is available at www.cypress.com/ccg1video.

Optimized for 2.4-mm thin USB Type-C cable connectors, the programmable EZ-PD CCG2 controller is fully capable of supporting any USB Type-C Downstream Facing Port (DFP), Upstream Facing Port (UFP) or Dual Role Port (DRP) applications. EZ-PD CCG2 is available in a 3.3 mm2 20-ball Wafer Level Chip Scale Package (WLCSP), a 14-pin DFN and a 24-pin QFN. EZ-PD CCG2 is the first programmable solution to fully integrate the USB Type-C transceiver, system-level ESD protection, and termination resistors needed for all USB Type-C applications.
