SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI), leader in eye tracking technology, has been invited by Dell to showcase SMI's unique virtual reality eye tracking technology at Dell World, October 20-22, 2015, in Austin, TX, USA. SMI demonstrates gaze-assisted human-computer-interaction and training for professionals in virtual reality. The showcases are powered by a Dell Precision Tower 5810 high-end workstation and an Oculus Rift DK2 with SMI's unique and proven eye tracking upgrade. SMI HMD Eye Tracking technology enables realistic, fast and real-time hand-eye coordination in the virtual environment and provides live feedback on a user's visual interaction. The demos represent two of many scenarios where eye tracking brings new possibilities to VR.

Eye Tracking for VR can be used to create intuitive interaction by using gaze to select or move objects, or by adding eye movements to life-like avatar animations. One of the SMI showcase scenarios at Dell World lets users manipulate objects in an assembly task by selecting with gaze and moving them with the virtual hands.

A second scenario demonstrates eye tracking assisted interaction and live gaze feedback in a control room task. In professional training scenarios, gaze feedback to an instructor can be used to assess performance during routines which are visually complex. While real-time gaze guidance for the trainee can help to structure task execution with gaze cues overlaid on the virtual scene. This visual guidance accelerates training and feedback and can make expert knowledge explicitly visible.

SMI's eye tracking upgrade for the Oculus Rift DK 2 is the only high performance eye tracking solution available and proven for VR applications. It is designed for VR developers and researchers and comes with a calibration-free user mode for quick and easy setup. A fully automatic slip compensation allows users to move or take the headset on or off without compromising data robustness.

SMI provides a broad OEM Eye Tracking platform with reference designs for desktop, mobile and wearable AR/VR computing and display formats ready for consumer and industrial OEMs.

"SMI eye tracking enables eye-hand coordination and interaction in virtual reality for intuitive and natural human computer interfaces," says Christian Villwock, Director of SMI's OEM Solutions Business. "This is why eye tracking is a key component for many display technologies. SMI's OEM Eye Tracking relies on a technology used by more than 5 million users under the broadest range of conditions. This makes SMI a reliable partner for consumer and industrial OEMs."
