Avago Technologies today announced a new series of miniature low cost, high performance three-channel housed optical incremental encoders for use in a wide range of office and industrial automation applications. Avago’s AEDx-8xxx encoder series, which includes a codewheel, LED light source and detector IC enclosed in a plastic package has been specifically designed for use in stepper motors, miniature servo motors, packaging machines and a wide range of industrial and factory automation applications. Avago is a leading supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications.
The AEDx-8xxx housed optical encoder is bearing-less and has integrated two-channel quadrature outputs and a third channel index output (A, B, I). The ungated index output is a positive index pulse that is generated once for each full mechanical revolution of the codewheel. The quadrature index and power supplied to the encoder are accessed through an eight-pin male connector on a 1.25 mm pitch. This new miniature housed encoder series is designed for use with motors that have shaft diameters from 2mm (miniature version) up to 5mm (standard option). Moreover, due to the highly collimated light source and the unique photo detector array design, the AEDx-8xxx is extremely tolerant to mounting misalignment.
Avago’s AEDx-8xxx series offers several benefits such as minimal installation cost, ease of assembly, high operating frequency that supports miniature servo motors (up to 24K RPM), and more accurate position control with the use of an index as a reference point. This encoder solution is also compatible with SMT automation equipment and pick and place machines. Moreover, this encoder series can operate in temperatures from -40 to 100 degrees C to meet most industrial temperature requirements. Typical applications include industrial printers and plotters, tape drives, industrial sewing machines, packaging machines and industrial and factory automation equipment.
