Broadcom Integrates Technologies and Resources from Its AMD Digital Television Business Acquisition

IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Combined Resources Produce a Complete AVC-Connected DTV Platform and a Turnkey CARD Reference Platform to be Showcased at 2009 International CES

DTV Technology Synergies Enable Accelerated Expansion of Leading DTV Solutions for Next Generation TV Platforms

IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its integration of AMD's digital television (DTV) business has enabled it to rapidly extend its product lines and turnkey system solutions for next-generation DTV platforms that further enhance consumer entertainment experiences, and position the TV as the multimedia hub of the digital home. Broadcom previously announced the completion of its acquisition of AMD's DTV business on October 28, 2008.

Broadcom will demonstrate the combined key DTV technologies at the 2009 International CES beginning January 8, 2009. The demonstrations will include a complete 120Hz advanced video coding (AVC) connected TV platform and a complete hardware/software system solution that integrates the customer application ready design (CARD) reference platform. Broadcom's DTV product roadmap now features the complete solutions previously offered by Broadcom's and AMD's DTV businesses separately, as well as a rich DTV product portfolio that integrates technologies from both companies and leverages a highly focused and successful world-class team.

"Our successful integration of the AMD DTV team and technologies provides the foundation to strengthen our combined businesses and expands our technology portfolio as well, enabling Broadcom to provide superior service and technical support to our existing customers," said Dan Marotta, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group. "Two of our new DTV technology demonstrations at CES showcase higher integration and advanced functionality that provide our OEM partners with the ability to customize and differentiate their next generation products while lowering overall bill-of-material (BOM) cost and accelerating time-to-market."

With a heritage of providing advanced DTV functionality, including high performance CPUs, 3D graphics and networking connectivity, Broadcom will demonstrate a complete 120Hz AVC-connected TV platform that enables consumers to access Internet-based web sites, home network-based digital photos, music and videos, and video-on-demand (VoD) services that are integrated within the television. These advanced features offer consumers the ability to customize their TV viewing experience and provide new options for accessing video content. Based on the BCM3549 and BCM35421 DTV technology, this complete TV platform offers manufacturers design flexibility, integration and custom tuning, enabling them to customize and differentiate products while lowering overall BOM costs.

Also to be demonstrated at CES is a complete hardware and software turnkey system solution that integrates the CARD reference platform with the Broadcom BCM3549 multi-format decoder connected DTV system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution (announced in September 2008). The CARD platform enables TV manufacturers to customize both hardware and software designs to differentiate products based on user interfaces and the visual look and feel, while also accelerating time-to-market.
