G2 Microsystems’ G2C547 SoC Named “Best Wireless Chip” by ‘Electronic Design’

CAMPBELL, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—December 22, 2008— Electronic Design magazine has selected G2 Microsystems’ newest low-power Wi-Fi chip for a “Best Electronic Design 2008” award.

One of only two technologies recognized in the Best Communications/ Wireless category, and winner of the Best Wireless Chip designation, the G2C547 system-on-a-chip is G2 Microsystems’ first in its Epsilon family of Wi-Fi chips that make it easy for manufacturers to embed Wi-Fi connectivity into almost anything.

Editors noted G2 Microsystems is “breaking new ground” with the G2C547 SoC and a “related module that allows Wi-Fi to be used in a wider range of applications that work from smaller batteries, like remote controls and asset tracking tags.”

“It’s a challenge to identify those (chips) that push the speed, power, and size boundaries or have unique features,” editors wrote. “Yet these new chips do offer something better.”

“Wi-Fi has become ubiquitous and the demand for Internet connectivity continues to be strong,” said Geoff Smith, G2 founder and CEO. “Our goal with the Epsilon family was to ‘make Wi-Fi simple’ and eliminate the need for hefty application processors. We are pleased to be recognized by Electronic Design for our unique approach to wireless networking.”

Introduced in October, the G2C547 system-on-chip is a fully-compliant IEEE 802.11b/g solution and includes a processor running a TCP/IP stack and handling Internet connectivity, advanced RTLS and wireless sensing capabilities, low power active and ultra low-power sleep modes, and extremely fast wake-up times.

To demonstrate the broad applicability of its technology, Wi-Fi speakers and headphones based on the G2C547 will be operating at the Intel booth during the coming annual Consumer Electronics Show in January in Las Vegas.

According to the magazine, the annual "Best Electronic Design" issue highlights the technologies most significant to advancing electronic design and honors some of the outstanding end-product designs produced in the last year. For a list of all winners, visit www.electronicdesign.com/go/best2008.
