ANSYS Integrates Advanced Fatigue Capabilities from HBM-nCode

ANSYS nCode DesignLife Promotes Product Durability

PITTSBURGH — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 19, 2010 — Seamless design optimization from ANSYS, Inc. (NASDAQ: ANSS) now incorporates the advanced fatigue capabilities of nCode DesignLife, a leading durability software from HBM used by OEMs and their suppliers around the world. ANSYS® nCode DesignLife technology leverages the open architecture of the ANSYS platform and enables mechanical engineers to more easily address complex product life and durability issues, all before a prototype is ever built.

Fatigue occurs over time as a product’s materials are stressed repeatedly by usage. Engineering simulation analysis using ANSYS nCode DesignLife technology helps product development groups avoid such in-field failures along with resulting warranty problems, costs and possible negative publicity. It also helps reduce raw material expenses that can result from product overdesign.

The combination of the ANSYS Workbench platform and nCode DesignLife creates a simulation environment in which fatigue analysis can be easily added to the engineering simulation process using the ANSYS standard drag-and-drop interface. Engineers can perform parametric studies and ask what-if questions about how a design will perform in the real-world environment. Fatigue analysis is inherently statistical in nature, and assessing the variation of inputs provides greater insight into the predicted results.

“Today, most product designs survive initial deployment, partly because engineering simulation tools can accurately predict stresses. As a result, developers can address cost and performance issues by optimizing their designs around raw materials and manufacturing processes,” said Joe Solecki, vice president, physics business unit at ANSYS. “However, consumers potentially use products over longer periods — and often in more rigorous environments — than initially designed for, which can affect long-term durability. Advanced fatigue analysis can address these issues, even before prototype testing. Through our partnership with HBM-nCode, ANSYS is adding to its mechanical simulation tools, bringing product developers world-class durability analysis.”

“The benefit of avoiding an in-service failure is enormous, both in terms of public image and actual costs associated with the failure,” said Steve Tudberry, vice president of nCode Software Products for HBM. "Our new ANSYS nCode DesignLife product offers a strategic and substantial benefit to our joint customers, answering durability questions through high-end fatigue analysis capabilities. The ANSYS Workbench schematic integrates all the parameters to enable global optimization — including CAD parameters. This allows users to optimize material usage while still meeting durability goals.”

Design engineers can learn more about ANSYS nCode DesignLife 12.1 during webinars at 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. EDT Aug. 26. Topics include fatigue life prediction using ANSYS nCode DesignLife based on ANSYS mechanical results combined with complete usage schedules.
