Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference (CMSC) 2011 Attracts
Hundreds of 3D Measurement Professionals Worldwide

Agenda Boasts of Expert Technical Presentations, Workshops, Exhibitors, Measurement Study and Industry Updates

Benbrook, TX – August 9, 2011 – The Coordinate Metrology Society announced today their annual Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference (CMSC) 2011 attracted more than 400 professionals in the precision 3D measurement and inspection field. Manufacturers, engineers, scientists, quality control specialists, metrologists, educators, and students attended the weeklong event. The 27th gathering of the organization was held in late July at the exceptional conference facilities of the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, AZ. CMSC members are professional and novice users, service providers, and OEM manufacturers of close-tolerance industrial coordinate measurement systems, software, and peripherals.

Mr. Frank Foeller of The Boeing Company was the keynote speaker at the 2011 CMSC. The conference delivered a comprehensive program of 26 expert technical presentations delivered by CMSC members, special industry guests, and master users of portable measurement technology for quality control, quality production and precision assembly. Industry experts from more than 10 countries covered a wide spectrum of 3D industrial measurement topics and applications. The agenda included speakers from The Boeing Company, Mann+Hummel USA, Rolls-Royce North America, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, Sigma Space, Argonne National Laboratory, National Physical Laboratory (UK), University of Arizona, University of Ontario Institute of Technology and more leading companies.

CMSC Exhibition Hall Brims with Bright Ideas, New Technology

The CMSC also showcased 47 exhibitors in the sold-out Exhibition Hall, which was abundant with new product introductions, technology previews and end-to-end solutions for portable metrology requirements. Advanced workshops were also conducted including a 3D Metrology Hardware Review, a CMS Certification Committee Update, and a venue covering GD&T software as applied to 3D scan data.

After the successful Gage R&R Study in 2010, the CMS organized a new large-scale, interactive study for this year’s conference focused on measurement strategies and behaviors of coordinate metrologists. The participants used a laser tracker, portable articulating arm, and an optical system to perform a series of prescribed measurements. More than 130 attendees participated in the daily data collection activity coordinated by the National Physical Laboratory (UK) and assisted by members of the CMSC Certification Committee. The results of the two day study were presented in a fourth workshop entitled “Results of the CMS Measurement Study and Statistical Analysis”.

The CMSC agenda also included well-attended networking events including a kick-off Icebreaker, Social Hours, User Group Meetings, and the CMSC Banquet and Trivia night. New to the conference was the early morning 5 Billion Micron Fun Run/Walk which attracted over 70 participants. Many CMSC visitors also attended a tour of the Boeing Advanced Development Center for Rotorcraft in Mesa, AZ, and concluded the day with a community outreach event in support of the Mesa United Way.
