In the last year or 2, I learned this prop was a redressed Vietnam War walkie-talkie, stripped of paint, coated in chrome and an illuminating acrylic bar slapped on the bottom. Modern Props offered another design (I assume closer to the classic look), but the studio insisted on the more rugged "brick". Probably Nicholas Meyers' decision.
