The "Externsteine" are one of the most mystic places in Germany. It is assumed that they -although being some natural formation- have been used since earliest time of native human settlement as a holy place. It was used to determine the summer and winter solstice too, just like the Stonehenge complex in UK.
The Externsteine are near by the city of Detmold in the southern "Teutoburger Wald", where the Roman centurio Varus and his legions had been defeated by Armin the cherusk.
