Hastati constituted the first two echelons of the heavy infantry; and they attacked the enemy in succession. Once they were within about twenty metres of the enemy they hurled the light pilum , after having disrupted the ranks in front of him, they attacked hand-to hand with their swords. As far as regards equipment, thery carried the oblong shield typical of the heavy infantry, and a coat of mail. The helmets are of the type called Montefortino; the legs are protected (both or more likely only the left leg…) by bronze greaves. « Less
