Actually they ARE "mob caps" and as an item of haute couture in the 18thC were not have been worn by servants. They were informal indoor wear to cover powdered wigs or to cover hair when not bewigged and were also worn over the hair but under hats when outdoors.

The article fell out of high fashion and became part of maidservant's uniforms in the mid to late 19thC.
