The 13 Days of Halloween:
“The Scariest Songs”
Hi Folks! Here is my suggestion for Number 8: What’s yours?
#8: Black Magic Woman
Santana, 1970
Same Set Playlist:
Witchy Woman – The Eagles
Witch Queen of New Orleans – Redbone
Swamp Witch – Jim Stafford
"Got a black magic woman, Got a black magic woman
I got a black magic woman, Got me so blind I can’t see
That she’s a black magic woman
She’s tryin’ to make a devil out of me"
This song, written by Peter Green, was a hit for Fleetwood Mac before Santana’s cover version became the signature standard. The full collection of songs about women like Mojo Hannah and her kindred sisters would be a huge one, and most of their lyrics would combine erotic fascination with primal fear. But whether it’s Redbone’s Marie cavorting in the Crescent City, Stafford’s hermit lurking in Black Bayou, or simply Henley’s seductress waiting in the bedroom, the same two questions come up, and they never receive good answers. Is she really a witch? Does it really matter now?
