This tutorial describes a technique of creating grayscale masks (transmaps, which could also be used as bump maps etc) from diffuse maps. Software used is a free image editor called Paint.NET; however, the technique is easy to adapt for any other image editor that can handle selecting or deleting specific colours in an image.

Remember: unless you have explicit permission to redistribute derivative works, the masks you make are to remain for your own use, in your renders only (not in products/freebies).
