 The second branch of the Mabinogion (the ancient cycle of Welsh Legends and the oldest prose work in Britain) tells the story of Branwen daughter of Llŷr.  She was the sister of Brân the Blessed, King of Britain and wedded to Matholwch King of Ireland who came to Wales seeking her hand.   However, on returning to Ireland, Matholwch treated Branwen cruelly and banished her to work in the kitchens.  To escape her plight, she tamed a  starling and sent it across the Irish Sea with a message to her brother who brought a force to rescue her. The ensuing war was terrible and only seven survivors returned home, among them the great mythic bard Taliesin.
