Possibly the most straightforward of the set, certainly the easiest to render, The Sun is an image of optimism.
There are two traditions for this card; one that has two children playing on a circular lawn in a walled garden (Marseille Tarot), and one that has a boy on a horse leaving the wall behind (Waite/Smith Tarot). I chose the latter purely as it’s a more interesting scene to construct.
The child represents the happiness of our inner spirit and innocence. He is traditionally shown with a head garland of daisies and a red feather in his hair. I have kept these (despite them looking a little odd), but have made the garland a circlet with a flower gem.
The white horse is strength and purity of spirit, and is controlled without the use of the hands symbolising control between the conscious and subconscious. The orange cloth/ banner shows control has passed from the conscious to the subconscious. Orange banner represents action and vibration, as do the rays of the sun. The sunflowers are life and fruitfulness of the spirit There are usually four flowers, representing the four suits and the four elements, but I went for a whole field… it looks nicer!
