I assume that the girl in the picture is an elf (and not a human) purely based on her horizontal-sticky-out pointy ears. I also assume that her worried …

I now keep looking back and forth between pictures of World Of Warcraft night elves and Dumbo, and thinking bat wings...

Cedarwolf: That prompts an interesting thought - maybe long elf ears are like tongues and can actually be 'moulded' to fit around the cranium. In fact this would probably be the normal state, and they'd only be extended to listen for things, or for a selfie.

I wouldn't have thought that there's much call today for running through thick forest undergrowth with a quiver full of arrows, so I have to assume, Elfwine, that you are actually an elf. And you therefore let slip a comment (i.e. "...(except the ears bit)...") that indicates that modern elves don't get their ears caught in forest undergrowth. But is this because the ears more …

After some googling I'd tend to agree that Victorian illustrators probably made the pointy ears 'de rigueur' for fairy-type folk. Also that the horizonticality was probably manga-induced. But I found some interesting observations that the ear-pointiness (or not) of Tolkien's "elves" (Quendi) is a moot point - tolkien.slimy.com/essays/Ears.html

Okay: World Of Warcraft night elves - I honestly thought that I'd made this lady's ears so long that there'd be no doubt that they were ridiculous. I take that back. And those ears seem to be articulated too.

Lol, good idea! You're right about viking helmets. Horned viking helmets were never a thing. Elves wore these rather than vikings.

Interesting thoughts. I'm having trouble getting my brain into gear to respond. But the thing that keeps coming to mind is vikings. So I'll post that to stop it blocking my other thoughts:
You know viking helmets?
The ones with horns.
Those weren't viking helmets.
They were elf helmets with built in ear protectors !

If she would grow her ears even more, she could fly like Dumbo the elephant, which would be practical in use!

Myself, I would say the tips shoulld extend no further than can be covered for safety by the cranium. Think survival skills and not fantasy artist esthetics. The extended outer ear would bring in auditory clues with greater acuity and distance, but they do no good if they get ripped off by sticking out and inviting trimming.

Nothing like running through thick forest undergrowth and getting your arrow fletchings and ears caught in thorny brambles! Been there, done that (except the ears bit). Back quivers work better than hip quivers in dense forests. Is she kissing her arrow?? Gonna need a bodkin-tip to get through that thick Klingon skull bump ; )

I think the night elf model in World of Warcraft probably had something to do with the ridiculously exaggerated ears... its certainly the first time i noticed it. Pointy ears on elves appear to be a Victorian invention, around the time of Arthur Rckaham's faery illustrations. The horizontal aspect as far as i can discenrn may be derived from some manga/anime depictions. Its intereresting more …
