An imaginary 18th Century ship captain's portrait, painted by an unknown artist. In his left hand he holds the royal commission issued to him by the Admiralty that same year. The following year his ship, The Elsie, foundered south east of Port of Prince, Haiti, losing 23 men of a complement of 40, and 40 tons of Cuban tobacco. He was sued by his employers for incompetence but was absolved by the court on grounds that the ship had been improperly fitted in Liverpool. However, he lost his commission as a result and never commanded another ship. Six years later, while on a trading mission to Sumatra,  he died of yellow fever and was buried at sea. He was survived by his elderly mother, His wife, Elisabeth and six children, five of which were daughters. « Less
