Visual semaphores were surprisingly common and surprisingly efficient.  They provided fast communication in many countries from 1790 to 1850, when electric telegraphs were mature enough to replace them.

I've modeled six different visual semaphore systems. All were real, all were used to some extent by government and business, all are based on drawings or photographs of real structures.

 

As usual, the set includes Pythons to run actual texts on each of the systems. « Less
