The culmination of  Variable Geometry Fighter development was the VGF-X program, an attempt to make the Wildcat a true aerospace aircraft. Development was lengthy and major cost overruns and delays saw serious issues with the program. When development was completed it was found that the additional drive engines, thrusters, and missile pods seriously overloaded the basic airframe of the Wildcat and the project was abandoned instead leading to a complete aircraft redesign which resulted in the AVF (Advanced Variable Fighter) project culminating in the YF-35 Warthog aerospace VGF. Despite abandonment, there are still a few examples of this failed experimental system gathering dust at various storage facilities awaiting disassembly and scrapping...
