It’s just an opening. The idea is that you can have one scene behind it and another in front so it looks like it leads to another dimension.

I suppose you could fill frame with plain glass then, with that as hypotenuse, put a pair of 'mirrors' behind it in right-angle triangle... We had a pair of mirror-fronted wardrobes in a corner, and resulting 'apparition' startled our Siamese kitty. She came to understand mirrors, would hiss at her distorted reflection from eg kettle...
