One word to describe Dr. North's professional history: multifaceted. A master of the "nano" world, Dr. North earned a Ph.D. and Masters in Materials Science and Engineering, and graduated summa cum laude in Mechanical Engineering from U.C. Santa Barbara. During his graduate work, he designed and fabricated the world's first adhesive that could be turned on and off electronically. It was inspired by biological adhesives systems, such those in the feet of geckos.  Mike's scientific interests delve into specialties such as biomimetics, micro/nanofabrication, nanoscale microscopy and micro/nanomechanical characterization.

In addition to his work with North Design Labs where he advises and consults with other innovators, Dr. North is the founder of ReAllocate, a non-profit that leverages a volunteer network of high-level technologists, designers and innovative thinkers to holistically address real-world problems. Of note, Dr. North is also the creator, host and producer for Discovery Channel shows, "In the Making," "Prototype This!" and "Outrageous Acts of Science," in which he invented several memorable innovations such as the mind-controlled car and wearable airbag.

Dr. Mike North will take the keynote stage to deliver his presentation, "The Art of Prototyping," on September 24 at 4:45 PM.

"As a respected innovator, inventor, designer and engineer across the tech spectrum, Dr. North knows how to wear many hats and can provide unmatched expertise to the attendees of our inaugural event," explained Katie Stern, Event Director, Designers of Things.  "His ability to fuse engineering and science with empathy and creativity will surely entertain and engage the audience in our one of a kind interactive closing session."
