Found it! It's just a desaturated version of the Poser render with a 3D Clouds node plugged into atmosphere. The fourth image is the render with Atmosphere off, and the fifth with atmosphere on turened on. The third image is the one where I messed around with masks.

Thanks everybody. Lucky indeed... I'm still trying to work out how I did it! I know I had a Poser Clouds node plugged into Atmosphere, and I added an extra Clouds layer in GIMP, and I did 'Add Layer Mask > Greyscale copy of layer' for various versions of the render, and I did a Z-depth render, and...
Heck! I'm never going to be able to work it out! :oS

Once I'd got M3 on the horse I decided that it needed some mist/fog.... I think the scene from Kurosawa'a 'Throne Of Blood' (I think?) where the two samurai are galloping through the haunted forest shooting at ghosts was the inspiration.

Thanks Tom. When I was a kid (many, many years ago!) I had a book about samurai, and I've been intrigued ever since. I modelled a yumi and a couple of kyujutsu poses for M3, including a Mongolian/oriental draw/release, and a kyudo sequence... but I lost everything!

A monotone is good. This is a proper posture in shooting of the Kyudo.
